In May 2011, a federal sting operation occurred, resulting in the retrieval of a tiny piece of lunar rock, smaller than a grain of rice. This operation involved a 74-year-old woman who found herself in a distressing situation. Joann Davis, a grandmother, had reached out to NASA in the hope of selling the fragment of moon rock that she possessed. However, instead of assistance, she was confronted by government agents who claimed that the moon dust was stolen and subsequently confiscated it.
